Why Are My Gums Dark?

- Serious gum infection: Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis (ANUG), sometimes called “black gum disease,” is a severe bacterial infection that can cause areas of gum tissue to die, creating a dark or black appearance. Symptoms often include significant pain, bleeding, swelling, and severe bad breath. ANUG requires prompt dental treatment.
- Medical conditions: Although uncommon, some medical conditions can cause changes in gum color. If discoloration develops suddenly or appears alongside other health changes, a medical and dental evaluation may be recommended.
